갤러리 플래닛은 한국의 대표적 사진작가로 손꼽히는 민병헌의 개인전 를 오는 4월 18일부터 5월 19일까지 개최한다. 민병헌은 아날로그 방식(Gelatin Silver Print)의 흑백 스트레이트 사진(Straight Photograph)만을 일관되게 작업하는 사진가로, 독특한 촉각성을 자아내는 회색조의 화면에 서정적이고 감각적인 분위기로 차별화된 그만의 사진을 선보여왔다. 1987년 평범한 시골의 흙길, 땅바닥을 스트레이트(straight)하게 찍은 <별거 아닌 풍경>으로 주목받기 시작한 민병헌은 1990년대 중반 <잡초(Weed)> 시리즈를 통해 자신의 특징적인 스타일을 꽃피웠다는평가를 받고 있다.
<잡초(Weed)>시리즈는 1991년부터 1996년 사이에 새벽 시간 서울 근교의 농가를 다니다가 우연히 마주친 비닐하우스 틈새에서 제멋대로 자라고 있는 풀들을, 재료나 기법의 가감 없이, 있는 그대로 담은 것이다. 생명이 자랄 것 같지 않은 곳에서, 위로 아래로 혹은 옆으로 제 힘 닿는 대로 자라고 있는 풀잎들이 그려내는 선 하나하나에서, 작가는 문득 자신의 온 촉각을 일깨우는 자연의 아름다움을 발견하였다. 그 시절의 <잡초(Weed)>연작은 작가의 현실적 곤란과 불확실한 미래, 재능에 대한 불안감이 살아 있는 꽃이 아닌 들풀들에 투사된 것이기도 하다. 이후 몇 해 동안 작가는 자연 그대로의 들풀을 직관의 심미안으로 낚기에 골몰해 흑백의 프린트에 섬세하게 담아냈다.
<안개(Deep Fog)>, <하늘(Sky)>, <스노랜드(Snow Land)>, <물(Waterfall)>, <몸(Body)> 등 많은 연작들이 있지만, <잡초(Weed)>시리즈는 작가에게 있어 젊은 시절 살아 숨쉬는 감각으로, 때묻지 않은 날것의 감성으로 몇 년간 몰입했던 최초의 연작이기 때문에 그 의미가 더욱 특별하다. 가꾸지 않아도 저절로 나고 자라는 자유분방함과 무목적성을 가진 잡초처럼, 작가 민병헌도 그저 자신이 마음 가는 대로, 보고 느낀 것을 있는 어떻게 하면 인화지 위에 가감 없이 전달할까에 골몰할 뿐이다. 이번 전시에서 만나게 될 <잡초(Weed)> 시리즈 다시는 돌아갈 수 없는 젊은 시절 작가의 감성을 만날 수 있는 특별한 기회로, 이제 성숙기를 거쳐 완성기에 접어든 민병헌의 작품 세계 전반을 이해하는데 훌륭한 출발점이 될 것이다.
GALLERY PLANET holds a solo exhibition of Byung-hun Min, one of the most symbolic photographer of Korea, from April 18th to May 19th. Min consistently works with black-and-white Straight Photograph using an analog way (Gelatin Silver Print) and has differentiated his art with lyrical and sensuous mood on a gray-tone screen that provides a unique tactile experience. Attracting public attention with in 1987 that presented ordinary dirt roads of countryside with straight photography, Min established his own style through the series of mid-1990s.
Min’s series capture images of grass arbitrarily growing in the cracks of greenhouse that Min encountered while roaming around farmhouses of suburban Seoul at dawn between the years 1991 and 1996. Min adopts a simple perspective through his lens without adding or subtracting any extra materials or methods. Min found the beauty of nature that awakened his tactile senses while observing the lines the leaves made while struggling to survive by extending to virtually every direction. Min reflects his own burdens of life and uncertainties of future as well as self-doubt of his talents by choosing wild grasses instead of fresh flowers in the series. For the next few years after finishing the series, the photographer delicately expressed wild grass in a natural state through an intuitive and profoundly aesthetic perspective.
There are many other series of Min’s including Deep Fog, Sky, Snow Land, Waterfall, Body and but the series is especially meaningful to Min since it is his first series that includes the lively sensation of youth, untainted and raw sentiment, and years of focus. In order to mimic the freedom and purposelessness of weed that sprouts and grows without any special care, Min simply contemplates ways to capture his feelings and reactions in a carefree manner onto a film stock. The series presented in this exhibition is a special opportunity for the audience to encounter the irreversibly youthful version of Min, and will be an excellent starting point for understanding the gamut Min’s works, which have gone through puberty and now reaching maturity.
