흔적 TRACE

우리가 당연하다 여기고 사소하게 지나쳤던 익숙한 사물들은 예술가의 작업을 통해서 자신들만의 고유한 존재성을 부여 받으며, 눈으로 볼 수 없는 새로운 세계를 보여준다. 갤러리 플래닛은 이처럼 사소한 사물에 대한 작가만의 감성과 기억의 흔적을 노동집약적인 작업 과정을 거쳐 정제된 시각적 이미지로 표현하는 사진작가 김수강과 조각가 이상길의 2인전 <흔적 TRACE>를 오는 5월1일부터 5월30일까지 개최한다.
먼저 사진작가 김수강은 우리가 일상에서 스쳐 지나가는 작고 소소한 사물들을 느릿한 시선과 관찰을 통해 건져 올려 그들만의 풍경을 만들어 존재성을 각인시킨다. 원래 그것이 있던 환경과 장소에서 끄집어내 단독으로 보여줌으로써 그 사물들과 관련된 고정관념을 끊어내고 오로지 그것 자체만을 주의 깊게 들여다보게 하는 것이다. 여기에 ‘검 바이크로매트 (Gum bichromate, 이하 검 프린트) 프린트’라는 고무액을 이용한 19세기의 인화 기법으로 수고스런 손작업 과정을 통해 자신만의 감성의 결과 회화적인 톤을 더한다.
한편 이상길은 흔한 조약돌에서 오랜 시간의 흔적과 그것이 함축하고 있는 존재간의 상호 관계와 우리의 삶을 매끈한 표면의 스테인리스 스틸 조각으로 표현한다. 얼핏 작고 보잘 것 없어 보이는 조약돌은, 천 년 만 년 서로 부딪치고 닳으면서 오랜 자연사의 무게만큼 매우 절제된 곡선을 보여준다. 조약돌을 닮은 그의 작품은 어울림을 통해 풍요로워지는 우리의 삶의 모습을 은유적으로 담고 있다. 특히 스테인리스 스틸의 매끈한 질감을 얻기 위해, 작가는 밤낮없이 망치질과 용접, 연마 과정을 거친다. 연마할수록 빛을 내는 금속은 접촉할수록 밝아지는 인간가 똑 닮아있다.
김수강과 이상길은 쉽게 스쳐 지나칠 수 있는 것들과 소통을 할 수 있는 작가들이다. 작은 사물들의 존재성을 보기 위해 기다릴 줄 알고, 이것을 작품으로 표현하기 위해 기꺼이 힘든 작업 과정을 받아들이는 작가들이다. 이번 <흔적 Trace>전시가 우리의 감수성을 일깨우며 일상의 잔잔한 감동을 공유하는 기회가 되길 기대해본다.
Some objects that are so familiar with us that we take for granted and just walk by are given their unique existence through the hands of artists, showing an invisible brand new world. Gallery Planet hosts a two-person exhibition, from May 1 to 30by photographer Soo Kang Kim and sculptor Sang Gil Lee who express the trace of their sensibility and memories towards minor objects on refined visual images through some labor-intensive works.
Photographer Soo Kang Kim draws small and minor objects that we unintendedly pass by from our daily life through her slow gaze and observation and creates scenery only for them and imprint their existence. By pulling them from where they belong to and showing them separately, she intends to break any prejudice against the objects to solely gaze into them in a very careful manner. In addition to this work, some painterly tones are added as a result of her sensitivity through the laborious handworks with a 19th-century’ photographic printing process that uses rubber solution called the ‘gum bichromate print’, or ‘the gum print.’
Meanwhile, Sang Gil Lee searches the trace of the old times, the interrelation of beings the times imply and our lives from ordinary pebbles and expresses them through a stainless steel sculpture. This pebbles looking somewhat small and insignificant show off their curves as moderate as the weight of the long history of nature through countless bumps and wear-out that went on for thousands or ten thousands of years perhaps. His art works that resemble the pebbles metaphorically reflect our lives which can be enriched by being in harmony. Especially to get the smooth texture of the stainless steel, the artist never stops hammering, welding and grinding day and night. The metal that shines even brighter as it is polished somewhat resembles human beings who become brighter as they are more touched.
Soo Kang Kim and Sang Gil Lee are the two artists who can communicate with the beings that are easily ignored around us; they know how long to wait to see the existence of small objects and are willing to embrace any hard works to express them. This exhibition of will hopefully awaken our sensibility and give an opportunity to share the quite emotional touches of everyday life.
