This is the first exhibition of Planet Gallery; the exhibition especially signified a new beginning with new mind at the starting point of the art market. Anxiety appears throughout the stages from the ‘start’ to finish. The figurative start of this uncertainty begins with a point then forms lines and ends with a single basic-typed unit. The name of the exhibition, was modified from the phrase ‘straight-forward speech’ which is commonly used. The ‘straight-forward speech’ uses the most forthright language to describe certain facts. This phrase ‘art of drawing based on straight lines’ implies the artists’ attributes which focus on images that begin from the basic figurative language. The attribute of straight lines is being straight. A straight line has clear directions and is the elementary unit of every shape. It also symbolizes the beginning of images and where they start. This exhibition has selected artists who actively use the elements of lines which are the basic of visual expression and exhibits their visual languages. The exhibition presents the sensuous inspiration of the process of beginning from the most basic element to completion through the art works of Hyun-su Kyung, Su-young Kim, Si-yeon Kim, Ah-bin Shim, and more artists. The element of lines on the images of their works is very important. The lines sometimes are connected, separated, and transformed in shapes and yet these clearly show the attribute of lines even through completed images. ‘Art’ including the modern art is an academic field that has been dedicated, for a long time, to regulating visual stimulations of artist into languages or officially determining the border for them but it, at the same time, has attributes to create something new by breaking the rules.

Hyun-su Kyung who majored in sculpture began his art works for this exhibition from a map. His three-dimensional work made with tangled roads cut off from a map is then converted into a plane work. The directions of lines, sides created by the intersection of lines, and the three dimensional spatial impression between one side and another are expressed in plain and three-dimensional surfaces. Sometimes expressing the structure of flat lines through painting and sometimes expressing the movement of lines that swing in the space, his works use bold colors and show sophisticated color senses. In harmony with strong and achromatic colors on the surface of plain canvas, rhythms are created on the screen. Sides, as if they were being made along the traces of their movement, are being colored and make spatial senses. The surface of canvas reveals the traces of movement of the brush, making the thickness of colored sides and strongly showing texture.

Artist Su-young Kim focuses on the surface of buildings in the city. Huge apartment buildings and tall buildings are filling up the painting screen; this is a method to describe the scenery that one views with his own eyes as it is. The shape of windows and outer walls that well show the characteristics of the buildings have all different colors for every single of the sides that form the shapes showing visually perceived textures and change of lights. At the same time, the huge three-dimensional object is moved onto a screen and turns into a plain image. This peculiar method enables the object to remain as an abstract image. This is the result of the artist’s intent to complete the image using the elements of lines and sides which does not mind the traditional perspective and eliminates the spatial feeling from the scenery seen through one’s eyes.

Artist Si-yeon Kim presents photographs of setup works for arranging various shapes and objet in the space of everyday life. Traditional materials for art are no longer in sight. Small and tender units commonly used in daily life, instead, are gathered and formed through the space of everyday life in a sophisticated way. This scenery in the space shows an image of sensitive defensive device which seems like it would just fall by a slight touch. Such materials as salt, soap, detergent, migwish, and other are embodied into geometric sculpture, repetitive patters, or bundle of rubber-covered wire, etc. and then go back to the space of daily life looking solid and yet make some kind of way to show tension.

Artist Ah-bin Shim creates the figurative shape made on screen or in a space using the most plain and basic elements of lines and sides. Often diverse plain works are inter-connected and sometimes these become connected naturally to spaces; this extends to the formation of space which can be called ‘painting set up.’ The relation of space and plain images create display of space more actively once it is connected to actual objet. This shows the artist’s own neat method to express satire, humor, metaphor, symbol, and many more through his works. And his lines and sides make balance among canvases creating overall formativeness.
