김진 작가의 정물 시리즈는 과일, 고기 등의 사물에 상업적인 목적으로 인공의 빛이 과도하게 더해져, 원래 지니고 있던 그림자와 어두움이 사라지고, 본래의 색은 휘발된 상태를 표현한 작업이다. 광택제와 밝은 조명으로 마치 발광하는 듯한 과일은 실제보다 더 반짝거리며 풍만해 보이고, 부위별로 포장된 고기는 더 이상 피의 흔적이 남아있지 않은, 피 흘리지 않는 ‘살(肉)’이 되었다. 흠집이 난 ‘살’은 우리의 시야 밖으로 사라지고, 그 자리를 반짝이는 것들의 매혹과 ‘살’의 관능이 대신한다. 그러한 ‘전환의 결과’와 ‘대체’의 현상을 그려내고자 한다.
Artist Kim Jin’s still life series involves the artificial enhancement of light on objects such as fruits and meats for commercial purposes, erasing their original shadows and darkness, representing their colors in a volatile state. Glossy finishes and bright lighting make the fruits appear to glow even more than reality, giving them a fuller appearance, while packaged meats no longer bear traces of blood, becoming ‘flesh’ that doesn’t bleed. Blemishes on the ‘flesh’ vanish from our sight, replaced by the allure of sparkling objects and the sensuality of the ‘flesh’. The artist aims to depict the outcomes of such transformations and the phenomenon of substitution.
