Inspired by the various characteristics of blue jeans, including their familiarity with us as a material, their softness in tactility, and their peculiar shades of washed-out blue, Choi Soyoung paints urban scenery using blue jeans as her canvas. An artist who incessantly contemplates the everyday landscapes surrounding her, Choi continues to expand her practice by studying the materiality of denim and exploring new techniques. While being representational in their techniques, Choi’s landscape paintings are, in fact, a complex amalgam combining the symbolic meanings the blue jeans carry in our post-industrial society and various popular culture codes with a select range of painterly mediums. The landscapes can be understood from a pop-art point of view but are also approachable from multiple other perspectives, and many have accoladed her oeuvre for allowing a diverse range of interpretations.

Choi graduated from Dong-eui University with a degree in fine art. In addition to notable solo exhibitions, including Tranquil Landscape (Gallery Planet, Seoul, 2019), Denimscape (Cais Gallery, Seoul, 2010), and Denimscape (Shinsegae Gallery, Centum City, Busan, 2011), Choi has participated in various group exhibitions and art fairs. Her works have been collected by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Korea, Shinsegae Gallery, and Grand Walkerhill Seoul, among others.
