As its last exhibition of 2014, Gallery Planet holds the exhibition by Eddie Kang, Sunyoung Kwon and Kyoungmi Lee, who unravel autobiographical stories with diverse imagination. These artists reconstruct the memories saved in their daily lives with unique imagination and represent them in a novel visual mode on a canvas or in space.

Among them, Eddie Kang recalls his childhood fantasies or a series of events to resolve and complete his unsettled memories (both positive and negative) and in the process becomes a storyteller. In particular, the rag doll often used in his work contains the symbolism of sewing, which he did during his years of studying abroad to fill the absence of things he cherishes.

Sunyoung Kwon, on the other hand, presents works that reduces and filters serious episodes found in her memory through cartoonlike characters and drawings. Familiar cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Elmo of Sesame Street are not in their usual carefree world, but rather in physical pain due to amputation or disintegration of the body, or even placed in destructive contexts. Sunyoung Kwon creates her own eerie and dreamlike fantasy through the clash and union of antinomic worlds.

Kyungmi Lee places in her works the search for the root of her ego starting with experiences of solitude and loneliness from childhood. The cat which is in virtually all of her works is an object that salvaged the artist from the sense of loss as well as the artist’s alter ego that substitutes her soul. In particular, the three-dimensional structures formed with low relief (building, book, doorframe etc.) and realistically depicted subjects in her work build the in which the real and the surreal coexist, as well as create various signs and symbols, providing direction for the those without destination.
